Mik'maq Fishing
Before the European Arrivals
The Mik’maq fished in Nova Scotia long before the Europeans
arrived. They would fish out of canoes, and according to drawings found
they also made a sailing canoe. The sails on these vessels were made of
birchbark, cedar or moose hides. The Mik’maq fished using nets and weirs,
by hurdles across streams, by bag nets, by hook and line, harpoons and spears.
There is no Native reserve on Digby Neck.
