Along with the restoration of the town, Fort Steele has developed a fun and interactive educational experience for the entire family about pioneer life in the Kootenay region. "Fort Steele became a stage for the understanding of East Kootenay's past. The way of life presented here is designed to inform visitors of how things used to be." (Ibid., 14.) On-site actors portraying settlers in the Fort Steele area offer visitors to the Fort Steele site the opportunity to learn what it was like to live and work in the early days of the settlement.

Everything from the costumes of the actors, shops, and the establishments offering food and beverages provide the visitor with a 19th century experience. There are a number of 'Special Events and Programmes' offered at Fort Steele that will appeal to all age groups. Events such as an Easter Egg Hunt, Dominion Day Celebration, RCMP Musical Ride, and the Christmas Sleigh Ride are just a few of the fun experiences that the friendly and wonderful staff at Fort Steele provide at certain times of the year.
