Research: Be prepared before the interview.

Questions: Write out the questions you want to ask. Make sure the questions require detailed answers, not just yes or no.

Arrange the Interview: Agree with the interviewee on the date, the time, the place and the time of the interview. Make sure you turn up on time. Make sure you leave on time.

Record the Answers: Write down as much information as you can, or take a tape recorder. Get permission before recording the person.

Borrowing objects: Your interviewee may offer to lend you relevant photographs, copies of forms or entry papers, or any other memorabilia that would provide an interesting historical record. Make a written record for both of you (receipt). Make sure the material is copied as soon as possible. Return the material right away. Make sure your interviewee signs in writing that you have returned the material.

Close the Interview: End by asking "Do you have anything else to add".

Expand your Notes: Right after the interview, note extra information.

Follow-up: Send a thank-you note. Return any material your interviewee might have lent you (photographs, artifacts, etc.) Invite them to your class presentation.

Share: Prepare a presentation based on the interview. For example, you could make an exhibit showing a map of the journey illustrated with quotations and photographs.
