The Qu'Appelle River is part of the Southern Saskatchewan River catchment. The Qu'Appelle River Dam controls the flow rates in the Qu'Appelle River and the Gardiner Dam controls the flow rates in the South Saskatchewan River.

The St. Michael Franciscan Retreat House uses water from these wetlands to irrigate their market gardens. You can find herds of cattle grazing there, it is also a great place for bird-watcher as sparrows, hawks, king birds and many others can be spotted in the area. The natural vegetation includes trees such as the buffalo berry, wolf willow and aspens.
