Dead
or broken branches can be the points where rot begins and
can constitute a safety hazard. Dead branches or stubs greater
than 7 cm in diameter (about the size of a pop can) should
be considered hazardous. (A stub is a short piece of a branch
still attached to a tree after a branch has broken off or
after improper pruning, Figure 1).
The evaluation of dead or broken branches
is based on the approximate size and number of dead branches,
limbs, or stubs.
