Welcome
to Exploring Saskatchewan History Through The Decades - The Missouri Coteau
Region. This region is located near the Canada - United Stated border. The hill
range called the Missouri Coteau is a very noticeable feature when compared
to the rest of Saskatchewan's flat plains, and actually runs from Minot, North
Dakota to Edmonton, Alberta.
This
site is based on a section of the Missouri Coteau roughly
1500 square kilometers in area, found near Radville, Saskatchewan. Topics of
this site range from the last Ice Age to "The Great Depression."
Each
section of the site is devoted to a different subject. Geological history, is
the first section in the site, and tells how the Missouri Coteau hill range
was formed. Aboriginal history tells of those Aboriginal people who lived here
long ago. Another section is devoted to a trail that runs through the area.
This trail, originally used by Aboriginal people, was used by traders, pioneers,
and also the North West Mounted Police on their trek west in 1874. The railway
also chose to lay tracks in the same general area of the trail. This area was
homesteaded from roughly 1905 - 1915, and there is a section with stories of
that decade. In "The Saloon" you can read stories of different lawless
activities in the area including a bank robbery by the Newton boys, or rum running
and moonshining. There is a section devoted to the villages located in the region.
Finally, a games section is also included with the site.
