The
Aboriginals were the first to live in the region, and in the course
of time, their travel created a trail that later was used by traders
for the Hudson Bay Company. When the Royal North West Mounted
Police marched west in 1874 they marched along the same trail.
This route was popular because of its relatively flat terrain.
A hill range called the Missouri Coteau is visible to the south
and curves up to the north. The Missouri Coteau would have been
very difficult to travel on with wagon. In this hill range is
a gap in the hills that was much easier to pass through than the
hills to its north and south. This is one of the main reasons
the railway also came through this region.
