Where I Live:
I live in the North of Canada, in the Arctic. I live here because it is too hot in the summer further south and in the north I can escape the heat. I return in the fall and winter, when it is not as hot. In the Arctic, I make my nest with mosses, feathers, and lichens. This region has very long, cold winters and short summers and almost never any rain. The weather does not bother me because it is very beautiful here; there are big coniferous forests, little plants and lots of flowers.
Who I am:
I am related to the Canadian Goose. They are my cousins! They live in the same region as me. I spend most of my time flying at night in big groups with other Barnacle Geese to find my food. When I go out to search for food, I know my nest is well protected because it is on tops of cliffs and huge rocks, away from my enemy, the Arctic fox. We are very social animals and mating season begins after we return from the Arctic. Each Barnacle Goose finds a mate which they will stay with for their lifetime. The female lays 3 to 5 eggs, and after they are hatched, the babies make their way down to the feeding grounds by themselves. The babies become adults in a period of 7 weeks. A big environmental problem we Barnacle Geese have is that we are hunted for sport in some parts of Iceland. Hopefully, people will someday realize that is wrong!
