Do you think it's possible that any province or state in North America would even think of banning the automobile? Well it happened on Prince Edward Island. In 1908 the government of Prince Edward Island passed this law as a result of public opinion. Many Islanders believed the automobile was a public nuisance to Island roads as there were reports of numerous accidents and it spooked horses. As a result the automobile was not welcomed on the Island, although over time exceptions were allowed. In 1919 public opinion about the automobile changed, the government lifted all restrictions and allowed its use. For a period of 11 years however the Island stood alone as the only place in North America where the automobile was banned.
