Lebanese Civil War or 1975

Man standing on a tankA bloody civil war that lasted almost 15 years began on April 13, 1975, the day after an assassination attempt on a Christian political leader. This resulted in the two main religious groups of Lebanon, Christians and Muslims, embarking on the country's bloodiest civil war. Lebanon's civil war would eventually see other Middle Eastern Countries become involved. The Canadian government under pressure from the Lebanese community decided to allow for sponsorship of Lebanese immigrants. They were one of the few countries in the world at that time to do so. Prince Edward Island, which had a very active and large Labanese Community by this time, would see the arrival of many new immigrants. These new immigrants were considered the second wave and would impact the established Lebanese community on Prince Edward Island.
