Ice Breakers

Postcard: D.G.S.S. Stanley in Heavy IceAlthough ice breakers were invented around the late 1880's, they did not come into full service until about the 1920's. Most early ice breakers were not able to break through ice like modern ice breakers. It was not uncommon for an early ice breaker to be stranded for days or even weeks. Prince Edward Island was virtually isolated from the mainland for most of the winter. Although ice breakers did try to get to the Island, it would not be until 1917 when an ice breaking car ferry was implemented at Borden. This allowed access to the Island year round.
