Lebanons Independence Day

In 1943 following 23 years of French rule which goes back to the end of World War One. The French, who were reluctant at first to give Lebanon its independence, would eventually grant this on November 22 of that year. With this the nation’s two most populous and powerful sects, the Maronites and the Sunni Muslim formulated what is known as the National Pact which spelt out the political makeup as well its general orientation in foreign affairs. This agreement allocated political power to Lebanon’s religious sects on the basis of population. Today in Lebanon the people celebrate November 22 as Independence Day, a national holiday.
