Fort McMurray Historical Society

Purpose

The purpose of the Fort McMurray Historical Society is to encourage and participate in collecting, preserving, researching and interpreting artifacts, documents, buildings and sites in order to preserve and maintain an on-going record of the history of the region, and to inform and educate the public regarding our social and cultural history.

Bob Duncan - Founding President

Bob Duncan, the founding President of the Fort McMurray Historical Society, spearheaded the creation of Heritage Park in 1963. His goal was to ensure the history of the Fort McMurray area was recorded and preserved for future generations. In 1964 the land was donated to create the present 6.6 acre facility for Heritage Park. Financial support for Heritage Park has come from many different areas over the years including private citizens, corporate donations, municipal and provincial funding and the Alberta Museums Association. Charitable donations are always greatfully accepted. Volunteers have been the driving force behind the creation and ongoing operation of Heritage Park. Today's Park is the culmination of over 20 years of continued hard work and dedication of our volunteers. All buildings and large artifacts in Heritage Park have been relocated here from the other sites in Fort McMurray. The work to restore and maintain the buildings and large artifacts is ongoing. The Hill Drugs building serves as our museum. Exhibits include: native inhabitants, the furtrade, shipping industry, railway transportation, logging, fishing industry, salt plants, and communications. As well, temporary are changed on a regular basis.
