   Curatorial Archives
The curatorial collection on display at the Fortress of Louisbourg includes over 15,500 items. The Curatorial Archives section showcases rare and unique prints selected from the curatorial collection for digitization and inclusion on this website. Saving documents in this way prolongs their life. It is inevitable that materials will deteriorate over time, but through careful preservation methods used at Louisbourg, precious documents are well maintained. By scanning these, an online backup is created, making them easier and more convenient to access.

When you believe that historical objects have a story to tell, you gain a greater appreciation for the depths of the curatorial collection. Where as archaeological materials are part of a stored collection, curatorial materials are on display, encouraging you to interact with them.

Fortress staff are dedicated to creating a contextual representation of Louisbourg life in 1744. Re-enactments are made possible by the curatorial collections - its costumes and buildings filled with rich historical representations. Animation has a purpose: each example of costume, food and tool is portrayed to create an atmosphere of immersion in which you can experience the past.

The breadth and depth of the collection is manifested in its artifacts: original letters, printed documents, and line engravings of different sizes. Official correspondence to and from Louisbourg and France is the highlight of the artifacts archives, supplemented by an index of documentary summaries also housed at Louisbourg.
