You may wish to refer to the Louisbourg Institute's Web Site, which extends beyond the information contained in the Digital Collections. Louisbourg also contains details of the following:
  • A Microfilm collection of over 1 million pages, (Including Unique indexes to those collections) Genealogical research catalogues
  • 5 million excavated artifacts
  • A dedicated collection of over 250 costumes
The Louisbourg Archaeological collection has always accommodated outside researchers. The number has grown, and during the year, outside researchers and artists or special interest groups visit the collection routinely. Loans have also been made for temporary exhibitions to such institutions as the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and the Musee D'Orginey-Bemon in LaRochelle, France. Teaching collections are on loan to Memorial University, The University of Southern Alabama and the Canadian Museum of Science. A long-term loan has been made to the Acadian Museum at the University of Moncton.

Visitors to Louisbourg can see artifacts in a number of exhibits. The Archaeology Typological exhibit located in the King's Bastion contains hundreds of examples of ceramics and glass found at the site. The architecture exhibit displayed in the Carrerot House illustrates a wide range of 18th century-building hardware.

Information about the Modern Town Of Louisbourg

The community of Louisbourg is located on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. It is approximately 34 kilometres (21 miles) from the city of Sydney. It has a population of over 1265 residents. Louisbourg's economy is based on the fish and tourism. There is still an active lobster and crab fishery during the summer months. Tourism is also a valuable part of the Louisbourg economy, which makes the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site a very valued member of the community.
