East Milford Mastodon

Mastodon Jaw

This photo shows the palate and four molar teeth of a mastodon found at a gypsum quarry near East Milford, Nova Scotia. Mastodons were elephant-like animals that lived here during the Ice Ages, but later became extinct. Although there are many theories, we may never know what caused their extinction. The East Milford Mastodon is the most complete mastodon material found in Nova Scotia to date.
