• Each successive generation has surpassed the last.  Some have found their place in the pantheon of scientific discoveries.  Their contributions to humanity are immense.

• Tak Mak is one of the world’s renowed immunologists.  His name is legendary in the field of science and medicine.  Afterall, he was the one in 1984 who identified the T-cell receptor as the gene that caused cystic fibrosis.  Today, he is director of the Amgen Institute in Toronto.

• Then there is Dr. Peter Liu, a Harvard-trained cardiologist who returned to Canada to work at Amgen. Working with Dr. Penninger, they proved the theory that heart disease and its failure was caused by viruses.  Their discovery made front page news around the world.

• Dr. Lap-Chee Tsui is the Hospital for Sick Children’s geneticist-in-chief, and the president of the Human Genome Organization.  Currently, he is mapping the genetic code for the human brain.

• Jianzhong Zhang, a fellow University of Alberta scientist, together with Dr. Dovichi were the ones who developed the DNA sequencer that played a critical role in the breakthrough of gene-mapping by the Human Genome project.
