K - 1

• Collect information from a variety of sources and experiences

• draw simple interpretations from personal experiences, oral sources, and visual representations

• identify contributions of various occupations to BC communities

Grade 2-3

• collect information from a variety of sources and experiences

• draw simple interpretations from personal experiences, oral sources, and visual

• identify an issue and provide several reasons to support a position 

• describe ways members of a community meet one another's needs 

• describe the historical development of various BC communities 

• demonstrate awareness of BC and Canada's diverse heritage

Grade 4

• locate and record information from a variety of sources

• demonstrate understanding of factors that influenced early European exploration of North America

• analyse how people interact with their environment, in the past and in the present

Grade 5

• explain ways people preserve and transmit culture

• demonstrate understanding of why immigrants come to Canada, the challenges they face, and their contributions to Canada

Grade 6

• describe daily life, work, family structures and gender roles in Canada and the world etc.  

Grade 8

• evaluate the changing nature of law and its relation to social conditions of the times

• analyse reasons for the initial exploration and settlement of North America

• analyse effects of colonialism on trade and conflict

• assess the impact of the fur trade on exploration and settlement

• identify factors that influenced growth and development of industry

• evaluate the effects of the Industrial Revolution on society and the changing nature of work

• construct, interpret, and use graphs, tables, grids, scales, legends, contours, and various types of maps

• describe and compare North America's diverse geographical regions

• identify major exploration routes and historical events in the development of Canada

• demonstrate understanding of the ways in which Aboriginal people interact with their environment

Grade 10

Grade 11

• identify elements that contribute to the regional, cultural, and ethnic diversity of Canadian society
• apply the following themes of geography to relevant issues:

  1. location (a position on the earth's surface)

  2. place (the physical and human characteristics that make a location unique)

  3. movement (the varied patterns in the movement of life forms, ideas, and materials)

  4. regions (basic units of study that define an area with certain human and physical characteristics)

  5. human and physical interaction (the way humans depend on, adapt to, and modify the environment

Grade 12

• analyse historical evidence to:
  1. assess reliability
  2. distinguish between primary and secondary sources
  3. identify bias and point of view
  4. corroborate evidence
• demonstrate the ability to conduct research using print, non-print, and electronic sources
• evaluate the significance of cause-effect relationships
• develop and present logical arguments
• evaluate the significance of economic and geographical influences on history
• draw conclusions about the influence of individuals and mass movements on historical developments
• demonstrate historical empathy (the ability to understand the motives, intentions, hopes, and fears of people in other times and situations)
