Cow Head 1910

Photo from L-R: Anna Moira Payne with Clara in her arms, Martha, Charles and their father Wallace Payne, with Robert Bennett, a young man from St. Paul's and who was probably working for the family. Martha was two when this picture was taken. Her left eye hadn't opened since birth and it didn't open until the day that Louie Moosie, a Frenchman from Daniel's Harbour, and his dog came to visit. The dog started to lick the eye on his own. After the dog started to lick the eye open, they had to hold Martha down until the dog was finished. After that she could see through both eyes, though her eyesight was always poor.
