Standing with her back to the picture is Mary Payne. In front of her (only the shadow can be seen) is Fanny Payne.  The ladies are " wringing out quilts". One person would hold the quilt at one end and twist while the second person held the quilt tightly at the other end. This would "wring" out the excess water. It was then hung on the fence to finish drying.
