Cow Head 1970

Sheep shearing was traditionally a woman's job as illustrated in this picture by Lucy and Rachel Payne. The men would help by lifting the sheep on the cutting boards. Using a short rope, the sheep's legs were tied, so that once the shearing began the sheep would stay still. Large household scissors were used and they were dipped in kerosene or fuel oil to make cutting easier. The women dressed warmly for the cold, but also to protect them from ticks.
