Tristram Bickle emigrated to Canada in 1834, and after spending a year in London, Ontario, he and his family settled in Hamilton. The following year, Bickle established a drug business which was located at 13 King Street East. His store was called "Medical Hall", and was to be found opposite the Bank of British North America. Bickle’s firm dealt with oils, varnishes, window glass, brushes, and paints, as well as importing English, French, American, and Mediterranean drugs and chemicals.

Bickle had a son, John Wesley Bickle, who was educated at Victoria College before joining his father in the family business in 1848. In 1875, John took over the business after his father’s death. The business operated for a period of 40 years before closing.  The site occupied by T. Bickle and Sons would later house Cesar's Restaurant.
