There was a Commercial building on the site of Pigott Building which was built in 1856 by the Canada Life Assurance Company. The architects were given credit for the fine building. It was the foremost social centre of that time. Tenants of the Commercial centre held names of many of the men who were prominent in Hamilton’s earlier days. For some time it housed the officers’quarters of the Prince Consort’s Own Rifle Brigade. In the same building, the Canadian Club movement was started where C. R. McCullough took a prominent part. The lot was purchased by Mr. Michael Pigott in 1889 who was the founder of Pigott Construction Co.
