THE HEART OF THE CITY
LAURA SECORD
113 King Street East
Frank OConner, owner of the Laura Secord Candy Shop, located at 113 King Street East, opened his shop on October 20, 1913. His dream was to supply the City of Hamilton with Lauras famous candies.
In celebration of the stores tenth anniversary, OConner decided to share the profits with his employees. As he said: "I feel that the success we have enjoyed would not have been possible had it not been for the steadfast loyalty of my employees, many of whom have been with me for the full ten years" (Spectator, January 16, 1923).
The company later opened a second Laura Secord Candy Shop at 42 King Street West in response to repeated requests from the people of West Hamilton. It was also thought that the new store would relieve the demand placed on the King East location. The store at 113 King Street East closed in 1984.
