Dow Corning Canada Inc.

The history of Dow Corning and silicones reads like a tale of high adventure and discovery. The exciting part is that many new chapters have been written and continue to be written, with no end of the "discoveries" in sight.

Top scientists from Corning Glass Works and high technology chemists from The Dow Chemical Company were involved in a search by the U.S. Government for a product that would enable airplanes to fly safely at higher altitudes during World War II. The problem was solved when they formulated and produced the first commercial silicone product DC-4 Compound.

To further explore the unique characteristics of silicones they had discovered and noted during their research, a 50/50 joint venture between the two companies was formed and Dow Corning was founded in Midland, Michigan in 1943.

Dow Corning Canada Inc. Canadian Headquarters, 6747 Campobello Road, Mississauga, Ontario. Administration, Accounting, Marketing, Sales, Technical Services Laboratory, Warehousing and Manufacturing are all located at this facility.
Today, Dow Corning is a multinational high technology company recognized as a world leader in the research, development and manufacture of silicones and other high performance materials. They serve 40,000 customers in industrialized and developing countries worldwide —United States, Europe, Canada, Latin America, Pacific and Japan. There are 26 major manufacturing locations; 10 in the U.S.A. and basic manufacturing facilities on three continents. They hold 1100 active U.S. patents, produce 4200 products, employ over 6600 people and invest approximately 8% of sales annually in Research and Development. The financial commitment to basic research is substantial. In 1987, sales were $1.3 billion; net income $135 million.

Although Dow Corning takes its name from its famous parents, the three companies are separate and unique with no common product development.

Silicones were first introduced into Canada in 1945 through the Dow Corning Products Division of Fiberglas Canada Limited (an exclusive distributor) under the stewardship of D.C.R. (Bill) Miller. By 1954, this division spun off from Fiberglas and Dow Corning Canada opened at 1 Tippet Road in North Toronto. Bill Miller, as General Manager, and a nucleus of nine individuals transferred from Fiberglas to Dow Corning. Miller retired in 1966 at which time he was Canadian President and General Manager.

Branch offices were opened in Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary. Continuous growth of silicones used in many industries created the need for expansion and in 1977, Dow Corning Canada Inc. Headquarters, moved to Mississauga, Ontario, where Adminstration, Accounting, Marketing, Sales, Technical Services, Laboratory, Warehousing and, most recently, Manufacturing, are under one roof.

Dow Corning Canada is proud to serve their many customers through a strong network of authorized distributors and applicators across Canada.

When customers turn to Dow Corning, they can draw on the world's largest and most complete treasury of silicone and organosilicon technology.

Construction and Home Maintenance silicones are used for glazing, waterproofing, roofing and firestopping in the commercial, institutional and industrial construction markets; silicone sealants and adhesives for the residential and "do-it-yourself" homeowner market.

Personal and Household care uses include silicone and active ingredients for antiperspirants, silicone ingredients for cosmetics, skin and hair products, fragrances, silicone coatings for automotive and furniture care.

In Health Care a variety of silicones are used for the manufacture of medical devices and pharmaceuticals; silicone and metal implants for corrective surgery and constructive surgical applications; electronic devices for pain relief.
