Pig iron was produced from ore mined in 1823 near present-day Blairton. The Marmora Ironworks struggled to survive throughout the 19th century. Nevertheless it was the scene of one of the province’s earliest smelters and foundries (NAC/C 59013)

 

William Logan (1798-1875), founder and first director of the Geological Survey of Canada. He was the first Canadian to be inducted into the Royal Society of London where he earned the society’s gold medal in 1867. The tallest mountain in Canada is named in his honour (NAC/C 7606)
