Borden Foods Canada
A Company with its Roots in Confederation

Borden Foods Canada is a company with its roots firmly entrenched in Canadian history. Founded in 1867, the year of Confederation, the company began as Catelli Ltd., a one-man pasta operation based in Montreal. Over the years the company evolved into what is recognized today as one of Canada's leading pasta and pasta sauce manufacturers.

Dedicated to providing Canadians with a variety of grain-based meal solutions, Borden Foods Canada is known for its extensive line-up of Catelli pasta and sauces, Classico pasta sauces, Lancia pasta and Bravo pasta sauces.

Today, the company is part of the Borden Family of Companies, which in turn is privately owned by Kohlberg, Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR), a premier investment firm based in the United States.

While Borden Foods Canada's history can be traced back to the vision of one man, Carlo Onerato Catelli, the Italian immigrant who settled in Montreal and started Catelli Ltd., the Borden Family of Companies' history is strongly linked to an American visionary, Gail Borden. Mr. Borden was best known for his invention of sweetened condensed milk. Patented in 1857, the fresh milk substitute was developed to combat problems created by the lack of refrigeration.

Carlo Catelli's vision continues today at Borden Foods Canada's Montreal Plant.

The innovation and vision displayed by both Mr. Catelli and Mr. Borden continue today at Borden Foods Canada. In 1988, for example, the company introduced Catelli Express oven-ready lasagne and cannelloni. In 1993, this was followed by the introduction of Catelli Healthy Harvest – a line of pasta developed for the nutrition-conscious consumer which includes whole wheat, added fibre and added protein varieties. In 1997, the company most recently introduced Catelli Bistro flavoured pasta – a unique selection featuring Tomato Basil Spaghettini, Italian Herb Fettuccine, Lemon Pepper Linguine, Garlic & Parsley Fusilli and Chili Pepper Penne Rigate.

Contemporary products also include what is perhaps one of the best known success stories of Borden Foods – Classico pasta sauce, an award-winning line-up of 13 premium sauces based on regional recipes from Italy.

Clearly, the company has come a long way from its roots as Catelli Ltd. Over the years, a number of products have been offered by Catelli's offspring companies including pasta, pickles, sauces, soups, puddings, syrups, jams and flour. Today, Borden Foods Canada focuses on meeting the needs of the modern consumer by providing meal solutions through good quality pasta and sauce products – carrying on the tradition Carlo Catelli started so many years ago.
