“Distinguished Professor of the Year”
Professor Victor Da Rosa, B.A., M.A., M.Ed., Ph.D., was born in Portugal, 1947. A Professor at the University of Ottawa, where he has taught since 1971, Dr. Da Rosa has held various teaching and research appointments at such universities as Indiana, McGill (where he earned his doctoral), Concordia, Laurentian, Vaxjo (Sweden), Fernando Pessoa (Portugal), ULBRA (Brazil), and Witwatersrand (South Africa). A prolific writer of scholarly journals and books about ethnic relations, international development, and anthropology, in general, Dr. Da Rosa has received many honours and awards which include being made “Comendador” of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator from the Portuguese government, 1989, being named the winner, 1988, of one OCUFA teaching award, recognizing Ontario professors making outstanding contributions in teaching and learning, and winning “Distinguished Professor of the Year, 1997,” by the University of Ottawa. First Portuguese Canadian Admitted to Quebec Bar
Arlindo Vieira was born at Serra de S. António, Portugal, 1951. Following education at the Catholic University of Portugal, Mr. Vieira immigrated to Canada. Settling in Montreal, Quebec, he was the first person of Portuguese descent to be admitted to the Quebec Bar, 1978. In 1986, he became a civil servant working for Quebec’s Ministry of Culture and Immigration. In 1995, Arlindo Vieira was appointed by the Government of Quebec as President, Conseil des relations interculturelles, an autonomous organization created by the Quebec government, 1984, to assist immigrants settling in Quebec and to ease their integration into Quebec society. Mr. Vieira has always participated in the activities of the Portuguese community in Quebec, serving as Founding President, l’Alliance des professionnels et entrepreneurs portugais du Québec, 1990-1992, President, de la Caisse d’économie des Portugais, 1987-1989, and administrator, Centre portugais de référence et de promotion sociale, 1978-1980.
