Choreographic Dancer
Newton Moraes had already studied dance with Anette Lubisco and Tony Seitz Petzhold in Brazil, his native home-land, before immigrating to Canada in 1991 to study at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. Three years later he launched his career both as dancer and choreographer and has never looked back. In 1997 Newton Moraes Dance staged its very first show in Stuttgart, Germany, to a sold-out show at the Makal City Theatre. He now returns annually to Brazil to teach contemporary and Afro-Brazilian dance in the Province of Porto Alegre at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul as well as at the Casa de Cultura Mário Quintana. The company has been supported by the Canadian Embassy in Germany, by various Brazilian cultural sources, and in Canada by the Canada Council, the Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, and the Laidlaw Foundation. Family Doctor for Montreal Brazilians
When Dr. Cinea de Souza immigrated to Canada from Belrizonte, Brazil, 1971, her plans were to attend a residency in Gastroenterology at McGill University, Montreal. Her intentions, however, were short-lived as she met and soon married Lebanese-born Dr. Habib Daoud, a gastroenterologist himself. Halting her specialist career plans in medicine, Cinea, instead, established a family practice. Before retiring in 1998, Dr. de Souza Daoud was known as the “Family Doctor to all Brazilians” in Montreal. A mother of two, she now enjoys retirement while her husband still is a specialist, practicing gastroenterology in Montreal. [Photo, courtesy Julia Souhami]
