Claudio and Marcela Durán arrived in Montrealon October 7, 1973. They were from Santiago and wereamong the first group of refugees to flee their homeland.Four days later, they arrived in Toronto with theirdaughter Francisca, age six, and son, Andrés, age one.Claudio has been a Professor of Philosophy at Toronto’sYork University since 1974, receiving in 1993 the“Canadian Professor of the Year” award by the Councilfor the Advancement and Support of Education.Marcela, who completed an M.A. in History andPhilosophy at the Ontario Institute for Studies inEducation in 1975, is today an Equity Consultant forthe Toronto District School Board.
