Canadian
Gold Medalists in Scotland
Happy Goan members of the
Canadian National Indoor Field Hockey Team celebrate winning the Indoor
World Classic, Scotland, 1999, beating out Australia, Austria, Denmark,
Scotland, South Africa, and the United States for the gold medal. In back
row, left to right, stands Ken Pereira, whose Goan roots extend to Bombay,
India, and who currently play son Canada's National Team. Next to Ken is
Scott Smith, not a Goan himself, but, as a member of Canada's National
field Hockey Team, plays locally for the Toronto Goan Team. Holding the
victory plaque is Louis Mendonca, Assistant Coach of Canada's National
Field Hockey Team. His Goan roots are traced to Pakistan. Next to him is
John de Souza, a Goan born in Uganda, and an ex-National Team player who
is, today, President, Field Hockey Ontario. Far right, standing is Ed Fernandes,
Vice President, Canada's National Team and, currently, captain, Goan Team
of Toronto. Although Ed was born in Tanzania, his parents were born in
Goa. Jeff Pacheco, bottom left, a player with Canada's National Junior
Team, traces his Goan roots to Kenya. Bottom right is Wayne Fernandes,
a member of Canada's National Field Hockey Team, whose Goan roots go back
to Uganda, where his mother was born, and to Tanzania where his father,
Ed, above, was born. [Photo, courtesy Ed Fernandes]
