Every four years, Toronto’s nearly 500,000 strong Italian population follows with great interest the results of the World Cup. When Italy’s National Soccer Team won the 1994 semi-finals, Toronto’s “Little Italy” exploded with enthusiasm, gathering along St. Clair Avenue near Dufferin Street shouting “Viva Italia” and waving tri-colour flags, as viewed in this Ron Bull photograph for The Toronto Star. Even though the Italian team lost the World Cup final, Torontonians from all walks of life were unified in celebrating the world achievements of an adopted “home team.” [Photo, courtesy The Toronto Star]
