Mavis
Elaine Burke came to Canada in 1970 to work with a firm of Ottawa-based
educational consultants. This was a change of career from her position
as lecturer in education with the University of the West Indies from which
she graduated with distinctions in theory and practice of education (Dip.
Ed., 1962). Her M.A. (Education) was earned at the University of London,
U.K., 1965. After completing her Ph.D., University of Ottawa, 1975, Dr.
Burke became an Immigrant Education Consultant with the Toronto Board of
Education. She became well known and respected for her contribution to
multicultural issues. From 1977-81, she was an Education Officer with the
Ministry of Education, Government of Ontario. She also became a valuable
resource to the diverse groups in the society. She served as Chair and
President, Ontario Advisory Council on Multiculturalism and Citizenship
(1981-85) and was Advisor to the Ontario Women’s Directorate (1987-88)
and to the Ontario Ministry of Education (1988-1992) on issues relating
to human rights and equity. Mavis Burke has also contributed to other sectors
of society. She chaired the Social Assistance Review Board (1985-87). She
was a member, Government of Canada Immigration and Refugee Board (1992-93).
Her volunteer contribution was highlighted by the registered charitable
organization she founded in 1987 to promote early childhood care and education
in Jamaica and in Canada – Women for P.A.C.E. (Canada). Dr. Burke has received
many awards including, as viewed in this photograph, being awarded the
Order of Ontario from Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Hilary
