Exploring
Causes of Social Change
Yunshik Chang, right, born,
Inchon, Korea, 1936, came to Canada shortly after graduating from Seoul
National University, 1958, to study Sociology at the University of British
Columbia. His interest in the cause of social change, particularly in a
democratic society, peasant life, folk religion, and Korea, in general,
prompted Mr. Chang to pursue post-graduate studies at Princeton. Upon completion
of his Ph.D. at that Ivy League school, Dr. Chang returned to University
of British Columbia where he was made Full Professor, 1980, and Director,
Centre for Korean Research, Institute of Asian Research, since 1993. His
numerous publications examine the currents of social idealism, rising commercialism,
the role of women, religion, and print media in Korea, all suggesting that
Professor Chang has created bridges of communication, making it possible
to understand better an emerging Korea and its role as an important state
on the Pacific rim. [Photo, courtesy Professor Yunshik Chang]
