Born
Tangalla, Sri Lanka, 1936, Dr. Suwanda Hennedi Jayasumana Sugunasiri, married
to Swarna and father of son, Shalin, and daughter, Tamara, attended Buddhist
schools in Colombo, Sri Lanka, before completing his B.A., University of
London, M.A., University of Pennsylvania, and Ph.D., University of Toronto,
1978. A civil servant, 1954-64, Dr. Sugunasiri has taught at Vidyodaya
University, Sri Lanka; Humber College, Toronto; Ontario Institute for Studies
in Education (OISE), Faculty of Education, and Trinity College, University
of Toronto. A U.S. Fulbright Scholar, 1964-66, arriving in Canada, 1967,
he is a Founding Co-Editor, Toronto South-Asian Review, author of non-fiction,
poetry and plays, producer/actor and dancer. Currently Founding President,
Toronto College of Buddhist Studies and, formerly, President, Buddhist
Council of Canada, Dr. Suwanda Sugunasiri has served on a variety of committees
including the Ontario Advisory Council on Multiculturalism and Citizenship
and an ad hoc Interfaith Committee on the Canadian Constitution, 1992.
Dr. Sugunasiri, in this view, right, stands with wife Swarna, recently
retired Head of English as a Second Language, York Board of Education,
daughter, Preeti Tamara, a lawyer who was called to the Bar, February 2000,
and son, Shalin Manuja, Assistant Professor of Law, Dalhousie Faculty of
Law, and formerly (acting) Senior Policy Advisor to the Minister of Justice
of Canada. Together, this family has earned 15 degrees and has amassed
