Filmmaker
with a Candid Eye
Of Ukrainian descent and
born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Roman Kroitor joined Canada’s National Film
Board, 1949. Considered one of Canada’s leading filmmakers, he was director-producer
of Candid Eye, the world’s first cinéma verité television
series, creating fascinating film portraits of public figures such as Stravinsky
and Paul Anka. Labyrinth, the National Film Board’s sensational 4.5 million
dollar film at Montreal’s Expo 67, was coconceived by Kroitor, Kevin Low,
and Hugh O’Connor. A resident of Quebec, Roman Kroitor joined Robert Kerr
and Graham Ferguson in co-founding Multi-Screen Corporation to develop
the IMAX process which produced Donald Brittain’s Tiger Child at Expo 70,
Osaka, Japan. Mr. Kroitor, left, is seen here, with Andrew Gregorovich,
Senior Researcher, Ukrainian Canadian Research and Documentation Centre.
