The
largest Ukrainian settlement in Alberta is located at Vegreville where
the biggest Ukrainian Easter Egg in the world stands. Erected in 1973 to
mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the pysanka
symbolizes the harmony, vitality, and culture of this community, a one-hour
drive east of Edmonton. It is reported that Prince Philip, when both he
and Queen Elizabeth II visited Vegreville, 1978, cautioned the Ukrainian
community not to keep the egg in the sunlight too long for fear that the
three-story-high egg might hatch. [Photo, courtesy Vegreville Cultural
