1858 - 1919 James, or "Jimmy" as he was affectionately called, was born on February 8, 1858. Jimmy did his early schooling in Victoria, then at the age of twelve he was sent to school in Europe. He decided to follow in his father's path and pursue a medical career so entered the University of Edinburgh, Scotland in September 1871 to study medicine and surgery. It was over in Scotland that Jimmy married Mary Jane Halliday in June of 1886, but sadly she passed away the next year. On August 10, 1886 Jimmy Helmcken was admitted to the Medical Regency of British Columbia. In 1884 he received his M.D. at the Bellevue Medical College, New York. |
Jimmy Helmcken practiced medicine for thirty-four years in Victoria, and was a well-known and well-liked Doctor, who specialized in children's diseases. His medical work was much acclaimed by his medical colleagues and patients, so much so he won the honor of being elected President of the Medical Society. Dr. Jimmy, as he was called to differentiate him from his father, was associated with St. Joseph's Hospital for many years.
Jimmy did remarry to Ethel Margaret Mouat on July 1888, and had a family of five children. His youngest child, Ainslie James became one of a leading citizen of Victoria and one of the cities first archivists in 1865. Jimmy died at the age of 61, suddenly passing away in his home from heart failure.
