Here are some examples from the Helmcken House of Art produced by middle class women in 19C Victoria. Many are done by Helmcken family members.

Cecilia Helmcken, like many woman brought up in the lifestyle of the trading post, engaged in needle and bead work. Some examples of Cecelia's handy work are on display at Helmcken House.

By studying the women's art work at the Helmcken house, have students make inferences about the artists life at the time - what may have influenced their choice in medium and subject matter? What does it say about the culture of the time? How might it have differed from the art of men in their era and social class?
