L. casei:
(Lactobacillius casei) Bacterium that grows in the digestive system.

larva:
The immature, wingless, feeding stage of an insect that undergoes complete metamorphosis.

lavender:
(Lavendula officinalus), a shrub with spike-shaped clusters of pale purple, scented flowers. Used in cosmetics. Also the colour of the lavender flower.

laxative:
A medicine or agent for releiving constapation.

lead:
Chemical symbol: Pb. Atomic weight: 207.19 Atomic number: 82. A heavy, fairly soft, poisonous metal. Used as an additive in some gasoline. Formerly (in Roman times) used in plumbing and tableware.

legislative:
Having the function of making laws.

lemongrass:(Cymbopogon citratus, Cymbopogon flexosus) A lemon-scented grass growing in warm climates, harvested for its oil which is used in cosmetics.

leukemia:
Cancer of the white blood cells, which are responsible for fighting disease.

lignin:
An organic substance that, with cellulose, makes up wood.

linens:
Fabric made from flax. Good quality, used in bedding and clothes.

linerboard:
A two-ply sheet made with some fraction of recycled fibers in the bottom sheet.

lipid:
Any of a group of organic compounds that are greasy to the touch, inosoluble in water, and soluble in alcohol, ether, and other fat solvents.

litsea:
A 400 spp. of widespread deciduous trees and shrubs, abundant in tropical Asia and Australia

litsea cuvata:
A plant used for personal hygene. See litsea.

livestock:
Animals raised in large numbers by farmers, e.g. cows, sheep, chickens.

logarithm:
The exponent of the power to which a base number must be raised to equal a given number.

lubricants:
Substances used to help moving parts move more smoothly.

lysine:
H2N(CH2)4CH(NH2)COOH, a basic amino acid. Produced chiefly from many proteins by hydrolysis essential in the nutrition of man and animals.
