The swine unit is managed as a typical commercial operation, using all-in, all-out (AIAO) pig flow. The sows are allotted to three breeding groups, with each group farrowing 2+ times per year; with this management design a group of sows farrows approximately every 45 days. Sows are hand-mated in groups with the breeding period restricted to seven days for each group. Assuming an 80% conception rate, a minimum of eight farrowing stalls will be filled with each rotation; at the end of a typical 28-day lactation phase, a typical sow weans nine pigs.
