History of Watson

Watson was incorporated in 1908 by settlers who arrived from the Yorkton and Rosthern districts. Vossen was the first post office, established in 1902. The railway system helped develop the area and steady growth continued for many years. The railway station was named after senator Robert Watson who owned the townsite and soon other buisnesses were established. Watson already had a post office and a bank that had been constructed with a greek style to instill a sense of stability and prominence. This bank is still standing and was declared a District historic site in 1977. It was later named the Watson and District Heritage Museum in 1980. It displays various artifacts, crafts and photographs.

Watson is also the home of "The Original Santa Claus Day. In 1932 "Jake" Smith, Watson's pioneer hardware merchant, conceived the idea of a Santa Claus Day. The idea gradually spred to other towns and now nearly every town on the prairies holds this annual event.

Another historic site is Rose Bush Acres which is a heritage resort just outside of Watson on highway #6. It is a beautifully restored 3 story home that was built in 1916. It offers a Bed and Breakfast, full restaurant, licenced dining and meeting room facilities. Rose Bush has a peaceful atmosphere and entertainment for both summer and winter.
