In September 1909 the first Humboldt Curling Club was established. The necessary funds to build a rink were sought for some time from private sources but eventually the municipality decided to take the project on to meet the needs of the quickly growing town. An 80 foot by 175 foot skating rink was constructed with an addition at the side, 30 feet in width, sufficient for two sheets of curling ice at the cost of .$4,600. The ice was to be leased for $250 from the Town with the privilege in the event of a bonspiel of using the skating ice for four days. The curling fees were established at $10 and by December 1909 the first teams were set up. The first games began on Jan. 3, 1910 with the presidents versus vice presidents |
competition. Two rinks, skipped by J A. Stirling and Sinclair Elliott represented Humboldt at the Saskatoon bonspiel that first season. The curling rink was torn down in 1924 and was rebuilt with a third sheet of curling ice. The club decided to allow ladies' curling in the afternoons and on Saturday evenings at a fee of $3. The first Ladies Curling Club was formed in December 1932 with six teams. After the Second World War the Memorial Curling Rink was built by volunteer labor. In the 1980-81 season, the new curling facility at the Uniplex was in operation. Over the years, many good curling games have been played in the Humboldt rinks and a lot of excellent curlers have represented the town in competitions. |
