The Windsor Hotel in Humboldt has been an area landmark for a good number of years. Opened in November 1905, the oldest hotel in town has seen a lot of history from its "across from the railway station" location. The Windsor was considered one of the best, most modern hotels on the mainline of the Canadian National Railway, costing in the neighborhood of $25,000 to build. It was heated throughout by siche gas. The first floor was taken up by a 40x24 ft. dining room and kitchen, a large sitting room, and the bar. The bar was one of the finest in the west, and decorated in the most up-to-date manner with all the latest fixtures and was stocked with the very best wines, liquors and cigars. On the second floor, immediately at the top of |
the stairs, was the public parlor, and to the right of it was a large and well fitted up writing room. The remainder of this floor, and also the third floor, was taken up with bedrooms which were all elegantly furnished. Dr. Heidgerken, Humboldt's dentist, also had his office in the hotel's southwest corner. This included a waiting room, dentist office, and a smaller office where all bookwork was done. The first fire in Humboldt was also at the Windsor. It burned while still under construction. The building was up and a stairway was partly lathed. It was thought that coal oil had accidentally spilled and was in some way, lit, causing the fire. Several men escaped in their night clothes but were still badly burned and needed medical attention. One man and his dog were burned to death. |
