As a growing community in 1911 Humboldt was in need of hospital services and supplies so preliminary steps led to Rev. Abbot Bruno, OSB contacting the Sisters of St. Elizabeth at Klagenfurt in Austria. On May 11, 1911, Sister Augustine Platzer, Sister Philomena Juch and Sister Gabriela visited the area and eventually obtained 10 acres of land about a half mile north of the railway. Construction of the original St. Elizabeth's Hospital was started in 1911. It was a two storey brick building (52 x 54 ft.) with 19 patient beds, operating room, chapel, kitchen and storage rooms. The upper floor was the living quarters for the 10 Sisters who made up the staff. The first patient, Matthias Strueby of |

St. Rochus hospital was built in 1925-26 for isolation of communicable diseases, but later became an Old Folks Home. In a heating plant and new laundry were constructed. A new wing was added in 1928 which contained a chapel maternity ward, and kitchen plus dining rooms. The chapel was painted by Berthold Imhoff. A new St. Elizabeth's hospital was completed in 1955 opposite the old structure turf. This increased bed capacity to 75. In 1968 expansion brought that capacity to 85. |
