75th ANNIVERSARY OF ST. PETER'S COLONY

A month of special celebration was held in July, 1978 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of St. Peter's Colony in 1903. Two major events were scheduled: a religious celebration on Sunday, July 16, at Mount Carmel; and a civic rally, July 23 at St. Peter's Abbey in Muenster. Most communities celebrated Community Days during the month. Cultural events included an orchestral and choral concert at St. Peter's College July 18 and 19, conducted by Alexander Peloquin of Boston College; two performances of HMS Pinafore at St. Peter's College gym July 20 and 21; performances from July 12 and 17 of With Plough and Prayer, an original play about St. Peter's Colony written by James Brewer and performed by Globe Theatre of Regina; and the RCMP Musical Ride at St. Peter's College on Aug. 31.

Guest of honor was Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Irwin McIntosh and his wife. Otto Lang, MP; Ed Tchorzewski, MLA; Herman Rolfes, MLA; Murray Koskie, MLA; Archbishop Charles Halpin of Regina; and Abbot Martin Burne, president of the American Cassinese Federation of Benedictine monasteries were among the special guests. In his speech, Irwin McIntosh made the following remarks: "It is important that each of us spend a day to consider our past and renew our faith in our heritage. History is very important to mankind. As Mrs. Ramsland, the first woman MLA in Saskatchewan, said, 'A nation without a history is like a man without a memory'."
