Gerhard Lipp

Gerhard Lipp was born in Linz, Austria, and comes from a family of artists who specialized in ''folk furniture decoration" (Bauernmalerei). After attending photography school, he studied art and became interested in traditional Austrian folk art forms by watching and assisting his mother.

Gerhard's principal work is decoration, either by painting or by carving. Heis schooled in Bauernmalerei and reverse glass painting, as well as traditional notching (Kerbschnitzen), exterior (stucco painting or Luftlmalerei) and interior house decoration, and in the restoration techniques of decorative painting and furniture. He has spent many years teaching in Austria and Germany, and has represented the Austrian government as a Folk Art Ambassador.

Since 1983, Gerhard has made his home in Salt Lake City, Utah. He has been busy working on exterior and interior decorations and restorations on buildings and furniture in Utah, California, Colorado, and Wyoming. While making use of traditional designs, Gerhard also creates his own patterns (without use of stencils or templates) which reflect age old meanings Most of his paintings are done freehand.

Mr. Lipp's experiences from numerous works and professional courses are assembled in this workbook. He has included tips and techniques of importance to anyone interested in pursuing this traditional art form, and is certain that these will bring the reader much pleasure.

The town of Humboldt admires Lipp's work, which can be seen on the Credit Union and Pharmacy.
