Two dollar coin
(commonly called the "Toonie")



 

Two-dollar coin (commonly called the "Toonie"): This coin, which went into circulation in 1996, introduces a bimetallic coin locking system patented by the Royal Canadian Mint.

The outer rim is pure nickel, while the inner core is 92% Copper, 6% Aluminum, and 2% nickel. The coin depicts the Queen on the obverse, and an adult polar bear on an ice floe in early summer on the reverse.

The nickname "Toonie" is derived from the popular nickname for the one-dollar coin, the "Loonie".
