The History of the Inco Coin Collection

The Inco Coin Collection originated in the London, England, office of Inco Limited. Mints from around the world were sending Inco coins containing nickel purchased from Inco. These coins were stored in boxes in a back room for many years. Someone finally realized that these coins were becoming an interesting collection, and, in 1973, an Inco employee was given the task of organizing the collection.

In December 1982, Inco generously donated the collection of more than 3,000 coins to Science North. This is a website containing approximately 100 of these coins, each displaying an image of an animal.

The collection has never been publicly displayed in its entirety, but portions of it are on display at the Big Nickel Mine in Sudbury, Ontario.
