Late in the war, the Japanese became part of the local Alberta scene and strict war-time controls became more relaxed. After the war, most of the evacuees had decided to accept Southern Alberta as their new home. This was strong testimony to the fact that many local people had been willing to treat the Japanese fairly. In 1948, the evacuees were allowed to vote in the Alberta provincial election. On March 31, 1951, the last Emergency War Measures Acts were extended to all persons of Japanese ancestry throughout Canada.
